Sunday School is offered during the 10:30 a.m. worship service every Sunday for children in Grade One through Grade Eight.
If your child would like to attend, please approach a sidesperson to ask them to connect you with the Children and Youth Ministry Director.
At the beginning of the Service, children are invited to gather together in the front north pews (by the pulpit), so they may learn to follow the service with the guidance of the C&Y Director.
After the Processional Hymn and opening prayers, students adjourn to the classroom. They usually return to the Sanctuary before the Eucharist (or Communion), and may rejoin their parents/guardians at that time.
If they are especially engaged in an activity, the kids will remain in the classroom until the end of the service and their parents may meet them there. If you are unsure as to the location of the classroom, please ask a sidesperson.
*If your child requires particular support in a group context, you are welcome to join the class in order to provide that.*
Children up to Senior Kindergarten are welcome to draw or colour quietly at the children's area in the Cloister *under your supervision*. The C&Y Director will aim to have a dedicated story-time with the pre-grade children toward the end of the service.
Children who reguarly attend Sunday worship are given the opportunity to read Bible passages (or Lessons) during the service. They are provided with professional coaching and this is wonderful way for them to develop public speaking skills.
In December and May/June, the kids perform plays for either the congregation or a paying audience. These are professionally directed and some of them are open to youth and adults from outside the St. John's Sunday School.
If they wish, high-school students at St. John's are invited to participate in the service as altar servers, and/or assistants in the classroom. There are many opportunities for them to volunteer in community-building activities throughout the year. As we gather more teenagers among us, we hope to run a regular Youth Group for spiritual study, and establish a theatre program for teens.
